Fire Destroyed Kelly Block, Bannatyne Avenue East. Damage Estimated At $400,000. The Saturday Night Fire Damaged The Mcclary Building Also, To The Extent Of $10,000. It Was One Of The Worst Fires Witnessed In The Winnipeg. Thermometer At 40 Below When The Blaze Was Fiercest. 8,000 Feet Of Hose Were Used. The Severe Cold Made It Doubly Hard To Keep The Apparatus From Freezing Even With The High Water Pressure, For Every Time The Firemen Changed Position The Apparatus Froze Solid. The Elements Forbade Leaving The Horses Of The Several Fire Companies Standing, So The Central Fire Hall Was Used As A Place Of Shelter. The Hall Was Also The Retreat Of The Firemen From Time To Time When A Thawing Out Process Was Necessary |
